Some Essential Items People Forget When They Are Packing for a Climbing Trip

February 28, 2021 by Tom Rico Leave a Comment

It is no fun remembering that you forgot something important when you are in the middle of a climbing trip. Even when you are just starting your climb, the next town might be too far for you to go out and get the items you forgot at home. To ensure you do not forget, here is a list of the essential items you need to remember to pack before you head out on a climbing trip.

Contents

  • 1 Map
  • 2 Water Bottle
  • 3 Knife
  • 4 Shelter
  • 5 Sunscreen
  • 6 Conclusion

Map

A lot of people rely on their phones for navigation. However, cellular connections can be spotty while you are up in the mountains and your phone might die. In these situations, you want to have a map handy. Maps are essential when you do not have a guide on your trip. Additionally, a map is important if you are not following a set route or decide to climb a mountain that is not frequently visited by climbers or hikers.

Water Bottle

You need to stay hydrated during your climb. A water bottle becomes important especially if you are climbing a mountain where water is scarce. The water bottle you choose should be large enough to last between refills. If you do not have a lot of space, you can always carry a water bladder. A water bladder is easier to carry and can be attached to the outside of your bag.

Knife

While it may seem odd for someone to carry a knife when climbing, it can come in very handy. A knife can help you cut the rope if you are in a sticky situation or help you cut some bandages if you need to take care of a cut. A good knife can also help you open cans of food, cut twine, or even make a fire if you decide to camp out in the woods. The Spyderco Ladybug Folder has proven to be one of the best climbing knives because it is small and compact, with a handle with lots of grip and a lanyard hole that you can use to attach it to your keychain or carabiner. It can also be opened with one hand thereby coming in handy when you cannot use two hands.

Shelter

Even when you think you will not be staying overnight, you still need to carry some form of shelter. You never know what will happen out there and it is always better to be prepared than to need something you do not have with you. The types of shelter to consider include a tent, sleeping bag, and tent tarp.

Sunscreen

If you are climbing on a sunny day, you need sunscreen. It should have an SPF rating of at least 15 and be water and sweat proof.

Conclusion

Forgetting to pack something you might need on a climbing trip is incredibly frustrating. It is always the small things that people forget to carry. Although the list above is not exhaustive, it is a great starting point to remind you not to forget the essentials.
