If Cinderella’s shoes were tight enough, she wouldn’t have left it that midnight. But the climber’s life is no fairy tale. How shoes should be worn in climbing is a different story.

Have you ever gone wall, rock, or mountain climbing? If you have, how did your feet go? Some may have been too focused on the other essentials in climbing like helmet, rope, harness, etc. that they have subtly discounted the importance of footwear.

Acquiring the right shoes for climbing is as important as having the courage to reach the summit, or joining the climbers’ team, to begin with.

What is roof climbing and what are the basic equipment needed to start rock climbing safely?

Roof climbing is not the typical “roof climbing” that you imagine when people climb up their houses to fix a leaking roof or install an antenna.

Roof climbing is a type of rock climbing wherein the climber is parallel to the ground as they climb as opposed to the usual vertical climbing wherein the climber is horizontal to the ground as they ascend.

An overhang is a rock formation that slopes more than 90 degrees so that it’s almost horizontal or perpendicular to the ground. Overhangs that are nearly horizontal are called “roofs.”
